When you think of branding what is the first thing that comes to mind? I’d be willing to bet that it’s a logo.
Logos are what people remember, because they stand out, they are simple, and they encapsulate an entire company in one little image. McDonald’s has the arches, Apple has the apple, Facebook has the “F” – all of these brands are easily identified by their logo.
Clearly then it is crucial for any business looking to gain ground in brand recognition needs a good logo.
But how do you go about making a logo – especially if you’re short on cash? I mean, as you know, many businesses that are just starting out, or even those that are more firmly established, don’t have spare money with which to hire a designer.
In step online logo makers!
Logo makers are websites that you can use to generate a logo for your business at a fraction of the cost of hiring a designer! Sounds pretty awesome right?
In this post we’ll take a look at 4 different online logo makers that you can use for your eCommerce store.
What You Need to Know About Logos
While all of these generators will create a logo for you, you do need to have some basic design knowledge in order to pick the best option, or to use the customization features well.
So here are a few quick best practices for logos:
Keep it simple! Think of a few logos off hand. Now tell me, do any of them have more than two or three colors in them? Do any of them have a complicated design or image? Probably not! Why? Because the logos that are the easiest to recall are the ones that are the simplest.
Not to harp on Apple, but Apple literally just has an apple as its logo. And guess what? You remember it! So tip #1 is, don’t get carried away with your logo. Keep it simple.
Make it relevant. What does that mean? Well it could mean to make your logo relevant to your industry or name. For example, Eastern Mountain Sports uses a mountain in its logo:
The connection doesn’t have to be quite so literal though. The connection could be made through the style font you use (rounder font tends to be more fun, while squarer font tends to be more professional), or the colors that you choose. For more on color, check out Color in Marketing.
Make sure it will always look good. Your logo may be created in color and in a certain size, but you have to keep in mind that it will be used for everything related to your business. Because of that, you have to be sure that it will look good really big or really small (and that it will still be recognizable), and that it will look good in black and white as well.
Now that we have those basics out of the way, let’s start talking about logo makers!
1) DesignMantic
The first tool we’ll look at is a nice and easy one. Here’s how it works – you put in your business’ name, select your industry, and press go! DesignMantic will then generate a full list of premade logos in assorted colors and designs for you.
Once you choose the logo that looks the best to you, you’ll get to work on editing it to fit your dream. You can edit the font of the text, and the color of all the elements in the logo you select:
When you are done making your edits, and you’re nice and happy with your logo you can choose to create business cards and letter head, or you can simply purchase your logo for $29 and move forward yourself.
2) Logoshi
Logoshi is probably the most creative logo creator on the web. Pretty bold title, no? Well, do you have a general idea for a logo, but don’t know how to translate it into a real logo? With Logoshi you can simply draw your idea and it will generate a good looking logo for you right away! (Woah)
From personal experience, this tool is definitely best for geometric shapes. If you have the idea that you will draw a cute dog on the side and this tool will make it awesome…sadly that won’t work. But just take a look at the examples above – this tool can definitely help you! It also only costs $5 to download your brand new logo.
3) Graphic Springs
If you want to get a bit more advanced with your logo maker, Graphic Springs is a good place to look. It starts off quite similar to other tools – you begin by typing in your company’s name and selecting your industry in order to choose an icon for your logo:
As you can see above though, the icons look less like standard clipart, and are of a higher quality than those on other sites
Once you choose your icon, you will be taken to an editing dashboard where you can change colors, add effects like shadow and glow, change the font, add shapes, and more!
When you’re done you’ll have a nice looking logo, designed just to your liking. For $39.99 you can get a one year subscription with unlimited downloads.
4) Tailor
Last but not least is Tailor. What makes this tool so unique is that it tries to give you the most customization possible, while also automating the process for you, because, let’s be honest, more choices makes a decision harder.
The process is actually pretty fun too! Here’s how to make a logo with Tailor.
Step 1: Write in your business name and your tagline:
Step 2: Give a bit of information about your business, and describe the type of design you’re looking for – handmade, powerful, sleek, etc.
Step 3: Select the type of logo you’d like – text based, icon based, or just an initial – I chose to go with an initial:
Step 4: This part is cool – Tailor now shows you a series of text comparison examples in order to learn your preference:
Step 5: Now Tailor will give you three different options for the style of logo for you based off of your information until this point. For example, my choices were sleek, modern, and rough, but with different preferences you might get different options.
Step 6: Based on your selection Tailor will display six logo options for you. This is great, because basically Tailor used your answers in order to narrow down the choices for you!
Step 7: Once you select your logo you are given the full ability to edit it to your liking. You can make changes to font, color, and shapes.
Once the dust settled, I ended up with a pretty cool logo!
In some ways this tool is the most complicated, but it also holds your hand throughout the process, and helps you along the way. The price for a logo ranges between $24 and $99 according to the chart below:
Conclusion
All of these tools are very handy, and can help you create the logo you need to get your business going! Each tool has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the one you end up choosing to use will come down to personal preference.
No matter which you choose though remember, simplicity, relevance, and universal usability are the keys to a logo that works!
