Learn How Old Guys Rule are Making 500% ROI Using StoreYa’s Traffic Booster

I had a very interesting chat with Dave Andrews from Old Guys Rule about his business, life as an entrepreneur, and of course, his success with the Traffic Booster. Dave is a great guy, and I hope you’ll find this case study useful.

How It All Began

Old Guys Rule was created to embrace a new breed of guys who have incredible energy, a passion for life, wisdom gained from years of experience and the time to spend doing the activities they enjoy. Old Guys Rule should be worn as a badge of honor for a life well-spent, but not nearly over.

When Don Craig asked a friend to make the first Old Guys Rule bumper sticker to honor his dad, he didn’t realize what he was starting.

Don grew up in Hermosa Beach in the 50’s. He learned to surf from his father, Doug, who was president of the San Onofre Surf Club and a hero to Don and his childhood pals.

As Don and his buddies matured, they came to appreciate the wisdom and counsel of Doug and his friends, Ross McAdam and Fred Casserio. In Don’s circle, these elders became “The Three Wise Men”, mentoring younger surfers, dispensing wisdom and supporting their aspirations.

In early 2003, Don had some stickers made as a tribute to his dad and the two other “Wise Men”. The first bumper sticker design was a surfboard running through the stacked words, Old Guys Rule. Within a week, other guys at the beach were asking for a copy of the sticker, as did some of the surf shop owners to whom Don sold product. Sensing a business opportunity, Don trademarked the phrase, “Old Guys Rule,” and began selling t-shirts, stickers and hats bearing the slogan to stores.

Shortly after the company’s launch into retail, Don realized that the “Old Guys Rule” motto extended beyond the surfing community to men from all walks of life who see age as a “Badge of Honor,” not an impediment. The once local t-shirt company evolved into a lifestyle brand with apparel and accessories that speak to men from around the world with passions ranging from surfing, golf and grilling to hot rods, motorcycles, sports, and more.

Old Guys Rule Marketing Foundation:

  1. What they sell. Old Guys Rule sells T-Shirts, Hats, and other unique products targeted at the 55+ male demographic. We are unique because we focus on this demographic and celebrate a life well lived.
  2. Their target is demographic. They have products for the 55+ male demographic. Year round it is a 50/50 split of male vs female buyers. During Father’s Day and The Holidays, it is about 65% female to male ratio.

How the Traffic Booster and Coupon Pop are Helping Old Guys Rule Grow

We used a few different pop ups to increase our email database. We were getting a couple hundred at most per month. The day we integrated Coupon Pop, we saw a huge increase of new emails in our database. We also saw conversion rates on sales go up.

We wanted to drive traffic to our site and used Google Ads for eCommerce as well as Bing to do this. Each company helped us get our campaigns up and running. We spent about 12 hours on the phone with Google alone, trying to optimize the campaigns. We have an issue where brick and mortars were undercutting us on price, and it was not cost-effective to buy CPC.

We decided to test a few different companies that drive traffic to your site. Each company had their own unique way of driving traffic (display, PPC, retargeting, Shared retargeting lists, social, social lookalikes, etc…). We spent a small amount of money with Traffic Booster and saw their CPC was converting through the roof. We are seeing a 5x return on every dollar spent with Traffic Booster. If you spend $1 and make $5 it just makes sense.

What Are Your Biggest Challenges as an Entrepreneur?

  1. Focusing. There are always a ton of things you can do but pick one thing and focus on it to get it going.
  2. Risk. Try to be as risk-averse as possible. If you have investors spend their money better than you would spend your own. Try to dip your tow in the water to see what is and is not working before you go all in.
  3. Be nice. It is a small world, and everyone is connected. Be nice to people; everyone moves up and down the ladder.
  4. Respond. Make sure you respond to people, including salespeople. Let them know when and if you can get back to them. No answer is bad.
  5. Honesty. Be as honest as possible with everyone you work with. It will only help in the long run.
  6. Uniqueness. What sets you apart from everyone else out there?
  7. Research. Look up everything and read everything you can on what you are trying to accomplish. It could be a subject line for an email or designing a logo.
  8. Success/Failures. Learn from your success. Don’t repeat your failures.
